History
Our Story
The Las Quebradas Biological Center Development Foundation (FUDEBIOL) was established on May 13, 1989, as a visionary initiative by the Quebradas community in Pérez Zeledón, at a time when forests were being cut down and the Quebradas River’s natural springs were starting to decline. In response, 33 community leaders from San Isidro and Quebradas (24 men and 9 women) came together, driven by the need to protect the canton’s water, to create a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the natural resources of the Quebradas River watershed.
Driven by committed community leaders and supported by local institutions, the vision of creating a foundation under Costa Rica’s Foundations Law No. 5338 became a reality. A dedicated group of citizens led this effort, headed by Luis Fallas Calderón, the main driving force behind the initiative, alongside leaders such as Ana Lía Valenciano, Manuel Retana Chinchilla, and Judith Calderón Fonseca. That same year, FUDEBIOL was recognized as a public interest organization, highlighting its vital role in protecting the water resources that supply thousands of people in San Isidro de El General.
A key milestone in this journey was the development of the Las Quebradas Biological Center, made possible by an initial donation of 5,250 square meters from the Camacho family. Over time, and through significant effort, 35 hectares of forest were acquired. Mr. Daniel Camacho Monge later made another generous contribution, donating two properties totaling nearly 30 hectares. With additional land acquisitions, the foundation now oversees 76 hectares in total. Today, this area serves as a sanctuary for biodiversity, a hub for scientific research, and a living classroom for environmental education.
For over three decades, FUDEBIOL has worked tirelessly to restore forests, promote reforestation, protect natural springs, monitor biodiversity, and educate thousands of children and young people. It has also hosted volunteers from Costa Rica and abroad, while building strong partnerships with organizations committed to sustainability.
Today, FUDEBIOL continues to grow as a leader in conservation and sustainability in Costa Rica, staying true to its original mission: to protect natural resources—especially water—preserve life, and educate for a better future.

Mr.” Daniel Camacho Monge is one of the most significant figures in the history of FUDEBIOL. With a strong vision, he is one of the co-founders of the Las Quebradas Biological Center and one of the organization’s greatest benefactors, as he not only donated the land where the administrative area and essential services were built, but also contributed two properties totaling 30 hectares, known as the “Forest of Youth Andrés Martí Camacho Jiménez” and the “Forest of the Elderly Manuel Camacho Jiménez.”
In addition, he has remained actively involved in all of the foundation’s activities and currently serves as a permanent honorary member of the Board of Directors.
